Out of the Ellenberger-Ziener partnership soon came the Vauen make itself, which grew to become Germany’s largest and most enduring pipe brand – a title that it continues to hold to this day. While Vauen is the most successful of Germany’s pipe-making companies, it has at times collaborated with pipe-makers from other countries to incorporate new ideas and styles into its catalog. This Vauen, for example, is one instance of a longstanding collaboration between the German make and Italy’s Caesare Barontini. The result is an interesting synthesis of German and Italian design philosophies; it is stout and sturdy in the German tradition, and is chambered to accommodate 9mm filters as most German pipes are, but it also features a uniquely patterned stem with briar inserts, in addition to wearing a strawberry-blonde stain more commonly used in Italian workshops. This allows the grain – a good mix of straight grain and bird’s-eye – to shine through, while also adding some extra flair to the overall composition. The pipe is completely unsmoked, with a factory-original bowl coating to help ease in its first smokes. It also comes with its original box and sleeve.
