VGN EL-1 Boxcab Electric #100, class leader of 36 box-
cabs, was designed and built in 1925 to haul coal tonnage.
VGN electrification also was completed in 1925 at a cost of
$15 million, powering 134 miles from Mullens to Roanoke.
The system operated on 11,000-volt AC supplied by its own
power plant located in Narrows, VA. Alco-Westinghouse pro-
duced the EL boxcab design. While rather simple looking,
these 1-D-1 units could operate singly, in pairs, and often as
a trio which could provide 6000 hp and tremendous traction
(231,000 pounds of tractive effort) due to their great weight
(well over a million pounds). They had quill drive transmis-
sions, with heavy side-rods (\"jack-shafts\") transferring power
to the driving wheels.
