DESCRIPTION & CONDITION

This sale is for a vintage 17.25\" tall African ceremonial wood carved spoon/ladle with intricate workmanship and topped with a female figure.

This detailed ceremonial spoon \"art sculpture\" is in overall near excellent condition. That said, besides what is considered typical age wear, there is a small hole on the rear side (last photo) that may have been drilled out for hanging. There is also what appears to be evidence of water surface damage to it\'s aged glossy patina. The right side of the backside of the scoop, buttocks\', shoulder and hair were all affected by what I consider neglect on the part of the previous owners. It appears to have laid a long period of time in a damp/wet location. This surface patina \"damage\" did not rot and does not affect the front and is not evident when displayed. The good news is that it could be restored with a mild furniture oil or, just leave it as part of its history but I will leave that to you. Besides that and typical age crevice surface dust residue, this piece is perfect.

I\'m not an expert on African art and am not entirely sure of what part of Africa it was created on or when, but believe it to be from the Ivory Coast circa early 20th century, but may be older and from elsewhere in the continent. It does bare resemblanceto Gabon Fang tribe pieces.

This rare piece is just wonderfully well carved, with great overall detail. Itwill look great in any type of setting or collection.
