Patch: USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, B.K. Llyd Capt, Bullion Composite Squadron Eight, Service Test, Phantom Phlyer.

This Jacket was owned by Captain Bruce K. Lloyd, Jr. He was born in Somerset, PA on December 7, 1917. His parents were Marion and Bruce K. Lloyd, Sr. Following High School Graduation, he earned a Congressional Appointment to the United States Naval Academy. He graduated from the Naval Academy in June 1940. At the time of graduation, he was selected to become a Naval Aviator following the obligatory sea duty tour. He became one of the gunnery officers on a heavy cruiser, the USS Tuscaloosa. The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on his 24th birthday. He was immediately sent to Pensacola, FL for flight training. He received his wings of gold in late 1942 and was then assigned to fly PBY rescue missions in the Pacific. After the war, he went to the Massachusetts institute of technology where he received a Masters Degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Subsequently he served several years flying P2V and was the Commanding Officer of a P2V squadron (VC-8) at the Naval Air Station in Patuxent River. He was selected for Test pilot training with Class XVI. A test pilot tour at PAX River was followed by time as XO of the FDR (CVA 42) then to Hawaii for a joint staff job then back to PAX River (1960) as the Commanding Officer of Service Test, then onto Test Coordinator for the whole area and a stint Acting Commander of NATC. He went to Helicopter training as a CAPT and set numerous international speed records for which he and his copilot were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Retirement from the Navy came in 1963. When he retired, he was qualified to fly anything the Navy could put in the air - fixed wing, jets and helos. He went to work for Boeing Aircraft where he was the chief engineer and chief test pilot for the helicopter division of Boeing. He was the chief engineer for the upgrades/design/armament for the Dual rotor helicopter (Chinook) that played a major role in the Viet Nam war. Following retirement from Boeing, he decided to teach school. Taught Physics and Advanced Math at a private high school in the Philadelphia area. My father passed away in 1987 and is buried at Arlington National Cemetary. He was married to Jane Johnstone Lloyd for over 45 years. She passed away in 1993 and is buried beside him at Arlington.
