Canteen cleaning tips: bottle brush works fairly well. Best way to get the inside of the canteen clean that has sediment in it is clean steel bb's and some granulated dish detergent before adding the new cork. fill 1/2 way and shake gently. When it is all clean and rinsed out and dry then add the new cork. Do not wet the cork before putting it in the canteen. When you fill the canteen water add a pinch of salt if you can like the guys in WWII. This helps to keep the water tasting better. When you are done using the canteen clean and rinse. Let it dry out completely. Leave the cap off and open. When completely dried out canteen and cork (this can take several days).
If you have a dented canteen with no holes: You can try this trick if you have dents in the canteen water expands as it freezes( as most people remember}. you can pop dents out of a canteen by filling it with water approximately 1/2 way and capping it (if the cap is cracked it will break in the freezer so check it well or use a standard plastic canteen cap from a newer canteen. As the water expands you may hear a pop in the freezer. You can do this several times and the dent will push out sometime all the way. My father taught me this one. It has saved some very badly dented canteens. Try it on a sad and dented one first if you are scared to mess up your canteen.
