The word \"ikat\" literally means \"to tie\". The pattern has been tie-dyed into the threads before they are woven together! If you look at the close up shots you can see how precisely the threads have been tied to produce a clear, crisp ikat. This is a three color ikat which means that this has been done twice to produce three colors before the threads went onto the loom.
