SLAVERY. Unusual manuscript document on a Georgia jury finding a slave named Jerry guilty of murdering Daniel B. Norton with an axe in Randolph County in 1853.


UNUSUAL MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT ON A GEORGIA JURY FINDING A SLAVE NAMED JERRY GUILTY OF MURDERING DANIEL B. NORTON WITH AN AXE IN RANDOLPH COUNTY IN 1853


The document reads in part: “In the name o’behalf of the citizens of Georgia charge & accuse Jerry a negro man Slave the property of Peter Stewart of said county with the offence of Murder, For that the said Jerry on the sixteenth day of June in the year Eighteen hundred & fifty three...of which said axe the said Jerry in both hands then & their had & held the said Daniel B. Norton in & upon the left side of the head of him...two mortal wounds or bruises the said Daniel B. Norton on the day & year aforesaid in the county aforesaid instantly died. And so the jurors aforesaid upon this oath aforesaid do say that the said negro man slave Jerry him the said Daniel B. Norton...unlawfully feloniously mindfully & of his malice aforethought did kill & murder.”


“THE CITIZENS OF GEORGIA CHARGE AND ACCUSE JERRY A NEGRO MAN SLAVE...WITH THE OFFENCE OF MURDER...OF WHICH SAID AXE THE SAID JERRY IN BOTH HANDS THEN & THEIR HAD & HELD THE SAID DANIEL B. NORTON IN & UPON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE HEAD OF HIM...TWO MORTAL WOUNDS OR BRUISES THE SAID DANIEL B. NORTON ON THE DAY & YEAR AFORESAID IN THE COUNTY AFORESAID INSTANTLY DIED”


The document is signed by Solicitor General Joseph Lyon and Prosecutor Peter Stewart, names the twelve jurors and eleven alternates, two pages on a single leaf, measures 12 by 8 inches, and in very fine condition with minor soiling and minor ink bleeding.
