POLO GROUNDS

The Polo Grounds, an iconic sports venue located in Upper Manhattan, New York City, served as the home of the New York Giants baseball team from 1891 to 1957. Its distinctive horseshoe shape, deep outfield dimensions, and steep, towering stands created a unique and memorable setting for baseball. The Polo Grounds is one of the most historically significant ballparks in Major League Baseball history, known for its eccentric field layout, which included short distances down the foul lines (279 feet to left field and 258 feet to right field) but an expansive center field that reached nearly 500 feet at its deepest point.

Throughout its storied history, the Polo Grounds hosted numerous legendary players and unforgettable moments. Notable New York Giants players who graced the Polo Grounds include Christy Mathewson, one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history, who played for the Giants from 1900 to 1916 and led the team to World Series titles in 1905 and 1921. Willie Mays, another Giants legend, famously made his over-the-shoulder catch during the 1954 World Series at the Polo Grounds, a play often regarded as one of the greatest catches in baseball history. Other celebrated Giants who played at the Polo Grounds include Mel Ott, a prolific home run hitter, and John McGraw, the fiery manager who led the team to multiple championships.

In addition to baseball, the Polo Grounds hosted a variety of other sporting events, including football games and boxing matches. It was the site of the first NFL Championship Game in 1933 and served as the home field for the New York Jets and the New York Giants football teams at different times.
