Tennesseewas moored on Battleship Row on the morning of 7 December when the Japaneseattacked Pearl Harbor. The battleshipWest Virginiawas tied up alongside,Marylandwas ahead withOklahomaabreast, andArizonawas astern.

At 08:20, Japanese bombers hitTennesseetwice; both bombs were converted large-caliber naval shells, the same type that had destroyedArizona, but neither detonated properly.In the course of the battle,Tennessee\'s anti-aircraft gunners were credited with shooting down or assisting in the destruction of five Japanese aircraft.
