The USS Maine was a United States Navy ship that sank in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898, contributing to the outbreak of the Spanish–American War in April. U.S. newspapers, engaging in yellow journalism to boost circulation, claimed that the Spanish were responsible for the ship's destruction. The phrase, "Remember the Maine! To hell with Spain!" became a rallying cry for action. Although the Maine explosion was not a direct cause, it served as a catalyst that accelerated the events leading up to the war. most likely the battleship was destroyed from a fire in a coal bunker. after the defeat of Spain by the United States the last of the European powers were expelled from the western hemisphere. This thrust the United States upon the world stage as an up and coming world power. this bell is roughly 3 inches tall and two and three-quarter inches at the opening has normal wear beautiful uncleaned patina,still rings and displays nicely. These were sold at the 1904 World’s Fair in St.Louis,Missouri for one dollar each….as stated on the bell material was taken from the battleship Maine to produce this item. It also comes with a copy of a certificate stating who acquired the metal where it came from and where it went to be manufactured into these bells. Material came from the world famous Francis Bannerman and sons… Who were arms dealers of the day and had all the rights to all the salvage from the Spanish American war American and Spanish items.All notarized and in full color suitable for framing. really nice item that was at the very flashpoint of the Spanish American War!!
