SAVING CIVIL WAR HISTORY, UNION MAJOR GENERAL \"FIGHTING JOE\" JOSEPH HOOKER SIGNED CARTE DE VISIT PHOTO PSA COANotorious and aggressive Union Major General (1814-1879) who distinguished himself at the Battle of Williamsburg in 1862 and as a result was promoted to major general; later that year he led troops into battle at the Second Battle of Bull Run and Antietam. Desirable 2.25 x 4.25 carte-de-visite photo of \'Fighting Joe\' in uniform with sword in hand, published by E. & H. T. Anthony from a negative from Brady\'s National Portrait Gallery, signed on the reverse in bold ink, \"Joseph Hooker, Maj. Genl.\" In very good to fine condition, with heavy staining in the bottom border on the front. Encapsulated in a PSA/DNA authentication holder.Joseph Hooker (1814-1879)was called\"Fighting Joe\"by the press as a result of an 1862 incident in which his horse was shot from under him and, after falling in the mud, he continued to lead his troops. In September, 1862, he was wounded at Antietam. Hookersucceeded Burnside as commander of the Army of the Potomacon January 26, 1863.After failing to defeat Lee at Chancellorsville he resigned his command on June 28, 1863,three months prior to the writing of this letter, and was replaced by General George Meade as commander of the Army of the Potomac. Despite his removal, he received a Thanks of Congress for his part in the Gettysburg Campaign. Hooker continued to fight in other campaigns, including the siege of Atlanta. After he resigned from his post in 1864, Hooker never saw field duty again; he served out the war in administrative posts.
