There is nothing more frustrating, nay, moretantalizing, than finding just a piece of a rare shell--like the beach near Kapolei in Hawaii, where we used to find pieces every kind of rare cowrie you could think of (teres, scurra, sulcis, schilderorum, tessulatas, and yes, even chinensis,) or the time when I found under a rock, ten feet from shore, in inches of water, big, gorgeous pieces of the super-rare eliase cone. So, it should come as no surprise that I began my shell collecting career in just such a way---as a young boy on Kwajalein, I used to occasionally find on the beach pieces of the rare, much sought-after floccatus cone. Yes, those were dark, bitter days of despair and hopelessness... But then one day I found a whole one! There it was, laying on the sand at the end of a rainbow, my first floccatus cone! Oh, beat up to be sure, but I'll tell you, when I picked it up, at that moment it was the most beautiful shell in the entire world!

And this shell, with vibrant colors (check out the photos!) ona near-smooth body and a great lip, even with the repair on its back (cleverly worked into its pattern) is the kindof beauty that shell collecting is all about. Andjust as my shell looked---sitting on that beach all of those years ago---sothis gorgeous beautywill looksitting on your shelf---simply fantastic!

As for normal disclaimers, we do the best we can with photos,but color is tricky, especially since cell phone cameras automatically leantowards flesh-tone coloring, (that's why so many of the photos of shells on show up with more orange than is really there, the camera changes thecolor, and damm if I can figure out how to stop that from happening, but I try,honest!
