She was the third and last ship of the DES MOINES-class of heavy cruisers in the U.S. Navy. She was the first fully airconditioned surface shp and the last active all-gun heavy cruiser in the U.S. Navy.
She was laid down 1 Nov 1945 and launched on 6 March 1948 by Newport News Shipbuilding and commissioned on 29 Jan. 1949. She was a 17,255 long tons ship with a length of 700' and beam of 716' and draft of 22'. 4 shafts, general electric turbines, 4 boilers, 33 knots.Complement: 1,799 officers and enlisted.
Decommissioned 27 June 1975Scrapped 25 Feb. 1993.
