LAST NEW BOOKEarliestrailroads in Dutchess County were the north-south routes that servedNew York City, Albany, and Montreal. These routes were relativelystable and successful. With that success as an incentive, aneast-west railroad was chartered and built.The first eightyears of east-west railroad operations in DutchessCounty, New York,saw turmoil, conflict, and multiple financial failures.Therailroad tracks that ran from DutchessJunction and Matteawan (Beacon, New York)through Hopewelland Millbrook toMillertonand to Connecticut at State Line had several different names in theirfirst few years of existence. Out of that chaos grew the Newburgh,Dutchess & Connecticut Railroad. TheND&C Railroad under the leadership of John Schultze and CharlesKimball established an operation that survived through good times andbad for over twenty-five years until it was absorbed into the CentralNew England Railway laterbecoming part of the NewHaven Railroad. Stilllater, eleven miles of the old ND&C line became part of theill-fated Penn Central, next Conrail, then the Housatonic Railroad,and currently Metro North.Earlysections of Twenty-five Years on the ND&C set the stage for theentrance of the ND&C Railroad. The heart of the book isthe twenty-five years of ND&C operation from 1879 to 1904.Recently discovered ND&C record books (thirty-three thousandpages in forty-eight volumes) are a window into the everyday eventsand problems of running a railroad in the late 1800s. They containeverything from compensating farmers for cattle run over by trains todealing with the great blizzard of March 1888, as well as orderinglocomotive repair parts or reporting the office washroom drain isclogged again.
