Years ago, I bought an unpainted Thunderbutt from Kitty Cantrell as a birthday gift to myself. He was the first resin I bought for myself, and I decided to use him as my National Model Painting Month (NaMoPaiMo) horse, with a simple challenge: Complete a Traditional scale model in pigments. His tail was customized into a short crop, intended to invoke the idea of him being a war mount. I wasn't going for anything historically accurate or even inspired by anything, I'm just a sucker for roached manes and cropped tails. I only had time for the tail.He was always intended to be a personal piece, and because I didn't intend to sell him and I (as anyone with ADHD can relate,) am impulsive, I didn't give myself enough time to prep him to perfection before the challenge started. Because of that, he does have some flaws that some people may find personally unacceptable.Off the top of my head:
- There is a visible seam on his nose that kind of blends in with the sculpted texture
- Between his right ear and mane there is a seam
- There are pinholes above his right elbow, on the back-facing part of the arm muscle
- There are some minor defects in the paint finish (small dots, misplaced brush strokes from the acrylic details, etc)
- Some parts weren't fully covered with pigment, such as in the feathering and under his tail
Noneof these flaws would stop me from showing him, but I want to be perfectly transparent about them so you can make an informed decision based on your preferences. He has never been shown, but my work has placed well in shows in the past and I have no doubt that even with his flaws, he would do well.
