Traditional Iroquois Gustoweh Headdress-old trade beads w/wampum PStJMohawk made:
$207.50

A traditional Iroquois headdress, thisGustoweh (kastoweh)by Paul St John, Mohawk craftsman ismade of turkey feathers and has with a large piece of natural wampum shell on front of the headdress support and 4 vintage blue/white/red chevron trade beads on either side of it.The headband and head frame are of ash wood splints that has been wrapped in vintage black wool. (please note - if this is too large... many Iroquois dancers use a headband under the band of this when dancing to help keep this in place and to absorb sweat) ...

The turkey feathers are a combination of the black-brown and white \"striped\" feathers of the wings and the bronze tinged feathers of the body and tail. This handsome headdress is a Mohawk headdress. Each of the Iroquois nations has its own configuration of larger feathers in the Gustoweh - The Mohawk place 3 larger feathers in a straight line from front to back on their gustowehs - as does this one. These feathers are placed in 3 reeds that are attached to the top/back support of the Gustoweh. With this configuration of longer feathers -this would be a Mohawk Gustoweh (Mohawk is one of the nations in the Iroquois Confederacy). THESE FEATHERS WILL BE REMOVED FOR SHIPPING >>> INCLUDED IN SHIPPING BOX IN PLASTIC BAG. You can cut bottom of quills on the removable feathers to somewhat shorten them if you choose

The large natural wampum bead - natural shape is roughly 1 5/8\" long x 1 3/8\" wide - roughly heart shaped and is placed at center front of the headband ...

The shorter feathers are individually cut to be the right length to cover the headdress support which is made of ash wood splints bent to shape and wrapped with the red vintage wool. The headdress support is about 7.75 \" inner diameter, 8.5\" outer diameter. The bottom of the support is about 1.25 \" wide/high. It is about 5.5\" high from top of support (cap) to bottom of support. The feathers extend out to make this 15\" in diameter and rise above the support on top about 4\" The headdress - with 3 higher feathers inserted is about 17\" high from support bottom to top of highest feather. the longer 3 feathers will arrive in a separate bag for you to place in the reeds. (you may want to glue these into the reeds so the feathers won\'t fall out if you intend to use this as dance regalia - won\'t need the glue if it is just to be displayed) - 3 longer feathers inserted into reeds when shipped as that would take a \"outsize large\" box to ship this - which would triple or more the shipping cost to you.

2nd to last photo shows 2 Iroquois men and a boy wearing gustowehs. Last photo is Paul St John

You could display this as a beautiful work of art - of use it as part of your regalia

Paul St. John now lives in Maine, near his late mother\'s Passamaquoddy/Maliseet/Micmac relatives. He is an enrolled Mohawk and grew up on the Mohawk lands in New York, his father\'s tribe. Last photo in slideshow is of Paul St John and 2 of his other works.Paul St John also makes birchbark, porcupine and coiled sweetgrass baskets, beaded knife cases, barrettes and historically accurate dolls among numerous other traditional crafts - check out more of his work in this store.
