F 0 R E W 0 R DContinuing my research in the histories of the old trolley lines that once dotted the Susquehanna Valley, which started with Sunbury and vicinity and resulted in the booklet \"SUSQUEHANNA TROLLEYS, this present booklet covers the small trolley lime that radiated from Milton, in the west branch valley; and Bloomsburg, in the north brunch valley.Milton is located about 14 miles north of Sunbury. From Lilton the trolley once connected with Lewisburg, which is the location of Bucknell University, and Watsontown. The area is served by two railroads, the READING COMPANY and the PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD. The READING made its entry into the scene when it constructed a line from Shamokin to West Milton in 1853. The line WAS extended to Williamsport end a branch built to Danville. The PENNSYLVANIA line had its beginning in 1854 when the SUNBURY AND ERIE RAILROAD was constructed between Williamsport and Milton and in 1862 was leased to the PENNSYLVANIA. The PENNSYLVANIA later acquired the LEWISBURG AND TYRONE RAILROAD between Lewisburg and Bellefonte and the SUSQUEHANNA BLOOMSBURG AND BERWICK RAILROAD between Watsontown and Berwick.Bloomsburg is about 20 miles northeast of Sunbury. From Bloomsburg the trolley line connected Danville, Berwick and Catawissa with two independent companies, further extending the lines in Danville and Berwick. This area is served by three railroads, the READING COMPANY the PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD and the DELAWARE LACKAWANNA AND WESTERN CO. The First railroad was the CATAWISSA RAILROAD, now a branch of the READING COMPANY, which was constructed in 1853 between Danville, Catawissa and the lower hard coal region. A few yearn Inter the LACKAWANNA AND BLOOMSBURG RAILROAD or the D L & M was built and later the DANVILLE HAZELTON & WILKESBARRE (PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD) was built and commenced operations. In 1904 the SUSQUEHANNA BLOOMSBURG AND BERWICK was extended into Berwick, then was leased to the PRH in 1920. From Bloomsburg the BLOOMSBURG AND SULLIVAN RAILROAD, now a branch of the RDG, ran north to Jamison City. Today it runs only as far as Bent on.Danville has won a place in rail history as the site of the first rolling mill built to make iron T rails. T rails were first rolled in Danville, October 8, 1845. The first 30 foot rails made on order in the United States were rolled in Denville in 181/9 for the SUNBURY AND ERIE RAILROAD.Berwick is the site of the American Car and Foundry Co. plant which built the first all steel care for the INTERBOROUGH RAPID TRANSIT CO, New York\'s first subway, and also built very similar cars for the LONG ISLAND BR, first main line electrification of a steam railroad. Lore recently this plant built a revolutionary new passenger train for Spain.
