The popular Union Sad Iron Heater, Lamp & Stove c.1895

Up for sale is one of the early sad iron heatersmanufactured by the Union Stove Company, of Gardner, Massachusetts. The city of Gardner is about 60 miles west ofBoston. Many of the parts and pieces ofthis heater are numbered and stamped into the cast iron. Dating back to the 1880s, these stoves weremanufactured at the American Oil Stove Company in Gardner. In 1890, it became the Central Oil and Gas Company. Even later, it became the Florence StoveCompany. Many various models wereproduced by the Central Oil & Gas Stove Co. of Gardner, MA; started byWilliam H. Wilder in 1875. This modelwas produced just prior to the turn of the century. In contrast, the other typical American sadiron stove had a wick winder and upper chimney section made by P&A inConnecticut while the cast iron bases were made locally; shipping was verycostly to rural areas in the 1870's to 1900 so it made sense to make the heavyparts regionally.

This UNION heater works as design and functions asit should. It sports a 4” wick with easy length adjustments on theside. The tin chimney shows signs of careful use, and it doesn’thave structural deterioration due to rust that would limit its use. Themica window and wick are in good condition. This UNION product is an elegant example of a portable sad ironstove, heater and lamp. This unit has its cork-lined metal fuel cap.

From the early 1880's through the 1890's, Myers Osborn& Co of Cleveland, Ohio (as well as many regional foundries) made some veryuseful little cast iron stoves. These stoves were made in one wick, twowick and three wick models. Each had a mica window in the front, so theyprovided light as well as heat.

The utility of this UNION sad iron stove waslimited only by the imagination of the user. They could boil water, heat a sad iron, or be used as a carriage heater - while providing some light.

DIMENSIONS (Approx):
~ Sad Iron Heatermeasures 6" Wide, 4" Deep, and 9"Tall.

You will be hard pressed to find another model in bettercondition. This special antique will be professionally packaged and shipped withina day of purchase.

HELPFUL INFO:You don't "trim" the wick in thenormal sense of the word because it is flat out impossible to "trim"an almost 4" wide wick perfectly level. So, you install the wick as evenlyas you can, then raise it 1/8" above the top of the wick tube. Trim offobvious high spots, then lower the wick 1/8" into the wick slot. Saturatethe TOP of the wick with an eyedropper or two of kerosene or mineral spirits.Raise the wick so the lowest portion of the wick is 1/16" or so above thewick tube. Light the wick, put on the chimney, and let the wick burn downlevel. At that point you can raise the wick 1/4", trim down the ends at a30 degree angle for perhaps 1/4" maximum, then lower to 1/16" or soexposed. Fill the fount with fuel, wait a half hour, then light. You shouldhave a nice even burn across the entire top of the wick.

SUMMARY:Collectively, this uncommon century-old UNION heater/stoveis in fine operating condition and will be a showstopper in any collection toshowcase a piece of Pressing Iron History from the post Civil War era.

If you have questions, don't hesitate toask.

Thank you for viewing and good luckofferding.
