A local history of the Battle of Philippi, West Virginia - proclaimed the \"First Land Battle of the American Civil War\". It took place June 3, 1861.The Battle of Philippi formed part of the Western Virginia Campaign of the American Civil War and was fought in and around Philippi, Virginia (now West Virginia). While it was proclaimed a Union victory, and the first land battle of the war, it is generally viewed as a skirmish rather than a battle.

The Northern press celebrated it as a triumph and encouraged Congress to call for a drive on Richmond. That \"Drive on Richmond\" would end with the Union defeat at First Bull Run in July. It did bring fame to Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan and was the first of a series of victories that would push Confederate forces out of northwest Virginia. It strengthened the Pro-Union government in exile, and would eventually create the new state of West Virginia. The largely-untrained Confederates fled the battlefield and the whole affair was jokingly referred to the engagement as the Philippi Races by the North.

This review is from an Amazon purchasedcopy in 2012

This is a short, informal narrative of the the American Civil War battles of Philippi and Rich Mountain, in western Virginia (now the state of West Virginia). The author sides with the secessionists but is fair enough to participants on both sides. She recounts more detail than is available in most narratives of the Battle of Philippi, but does not cover Rich Mountain as fully, discussing only the northern of the two battle lines. The style is relaxed and often humorous, and makes some acerbic criticisms of both General McClellan and General Lee (Lee was not present at either of these battles, but was in general command of the Confederate forces involved). This is not a scholarly history, but a commemorative account by a local resident; however, it makes up in detail, local color, and good humor what it lacks in academic substantiation.
