This sale is for original 1896 and 1897 issues of The Howitzer yearbook.

'THE HOWITZER" is the name of the annual yearbook for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. The first edition of the 'Howitzer' yearbook was 1896 and the second was 1897 (there was an 1898, but no 1899 owing to the Spanish-American War).

The 1896 volume is 9 1/2" x 7 1/4" and 168 pages. Nicely illustrated with black and white photos and some drawings. Flowered endpapers front and rear. It had class rosters and photos of each class, listing of faculty, and sports teams ( Football, Baseball, and Track pictured).

The 1897 volume is 9 1/2” x 7” and 113 pages (it is more uncommon than the 1896 volume). Likewise, nicely illustrated with black and white photos and some drawings. Flowered endpapers front and rear. It had class rosters and photos of each class, listing of faculty, and sports teams ( Football, Baseball, and Track pictured). Polo is written up, as it was new, but no picture. The best shot is of the 1897 Tug-of-War team! Additionally, there are two pictures of Cadet theatrical productions, complete with cadets playing the female parts.

Both yearbooks are in excellent+ condition:

The 1896 yearbook is not faded, and the gilt front cover is bright. There is a slight bit of wear to the front spine edge (pictured). The corners and spine ends are excellent. The text block is square, the binding is tight (hinges fine), and the pages are unmarked. Near Fine condition for a yearbook of this age.

The corners and spine ends are very good (corners slight bend and wear). The text block is square, the binding is tight (hinges fine) and the pages are unmarked. Very Good++ for a yearbook of this age.

There were 73 cadets graduated in 1896, and 67 cadets graduated in 1897 (the Class of 1898 was only 59 but 1899 went back up to 72).

There are numerous Colonels, Generals, and Award recipients amongst the graduates. For example, William D. Connor graduated 1st in his Class of 1897, served in the Spanish-American War, the Philippines, and in WW I. He was promoted to Major General in 1925, and served as the Superintendent of West Point from 1932-1938.
