Bayonet tip Tatar saber Czeczuga, 17th-18th century

Most probably Polish – Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Length 118,2 cm.

Long slightly curved single edged blade with onenarrow fuller, going along back of the blade, and double-edged bayonet-tipblade. The blade bears marks (decorations) – three rhomb marks with three dotson each of four angles, on one side of the blade. Bronze guard with nicenatural patina. Bronze pistol-shape characteristic pommel, lower partornamented with horizontal lines and row of half-moon marks between them. Thetopo f the pommel is decorated with deep specific ornaments of half-moons.Wooden grip is covered with ray skin and riveted with three iron rivets withbronze rosettes.

Bayonet – tip Tatar sabers are very rare, only few areknown in museums – two in Stokholm, Livrustkammaren, one in Dresden, TurkishChamber (Donation of Radziwills to Polish king Augustus II the Strong), and twoin Russian museums.

Provenance: Ing Peter Till collection, 1970s – 1990s. (paperwork enclosed).From 1997 in private German collection.
