Missouri is the third Iowa-class battleship of the United States Navy. The 16-inch 50-caliber gun Mk.7 mounted on the Iowa class was developed based on the North Carolina-class and South Dakota-class 16-inch 45-caliber gun Mk.6. The Mk.7 used the same ammunition as the Mk.6, but it has been made longer barreled and the charge has been changed to a low pressure charge for the long barrel to increase its power by gaining initial velocity. The turret and hydraulic system have also been redesigned accordingly. As a result of the faster muzzle velocity of the longer barrel Mk.7, the effect of wind is lessened, the range is longer than the Mk.6, and the power and shooting accuracy at close range are also improved.
