ABOUT THE TOLEDO, ANGOLA AND WESTERN RAILWAY: The Toledo, Angola, and Western Railway began life on July 11, 1902, intended as a spur between the New York Central and the Toledo Terminal, with the stone quarries in Silica. Initially, the line was constructed from Vulcan to Silica, a little over eight-miles. Their general office was in Toledo, Ohio. Originally eight-miles long, in later years, it would stretch twelve-miles. It ran along the New York Central\'s Old Road division (itself abandoned just beyond a grain elevator near the Ohio/Michigan border) for the first five-miles, then split, where it headed to Silica. The line was built mainly to haul stone, cement, sand and coal for the stone and sand companies, but the railway also serviced various lumber yards, a fertilizer plant and other factories like Hickock Oil, Owens Bottling Machine Company, Toledo Owens Glass Sand Company, Toledo Stone and Glass Sand Company, Western White Sand Company, Ohio Standard Chemical Company, France Stone Company and others. The line eventually folded in 1979 but was subsequently purchased by a club, which ran a few tourist excursions. By the late 1980\'s however the club had folded too. Lucas County (Ohio) purchased the line, turning it into a recreational trail, the University / Parks Trail. Today, almost the entire length of the right-of-way is used as a trail.
