As to whether it works: it's SUPER hard to push down the handle (could it be oiled?), but when you get it down, the elements do turn red, so I imagine it would toast bread. The clicking timer sound does work.
If you want it for the aesthetics, it's beautiful. But if you want it to easily toast your bread, it needs a little work. :)The cord is in great shape - no fraying whatsoever.
