All four members, including two Democrats, one Whig and one Free Soiler, signed this sheet.
Signatures: \"C. F. Cleveland/Hampton/Conn.\", \"Loren P. Waldo/Holland/Conn.\", \"Thos. B. Butler/Norwalk/Ct.\", \"Walter Booth/Meriden/Conn\", 6¼x7½. Ink caption (unknown hand) at top: \"Connecticut\". All four of Connecticut\'s members of the US House of Representatives in the 31st Congress (1849-1851) have signed. The 31st Congress witnessed difficult efforts, amidst clamorous debate (and in one case drawn pistols) to preserve the Union through the narrowly adopted Compromise of 1850. To conciliate the south, this Congress also passed a Fugitive Slave Act, broadening the powers of the federal government to capture escaped slaves and return them to their owners, a measure detested by many in the North. President Zachary Taylor died during this session, succeeded as President by Millard Fillmore. Signers here are CHAUNCEY FITCH CLEVELAND (1799-1887), a Democrat and former Governor of Connecticut (1842-1843). After serving two terms in Congress, he switched to the Republican Party after its formation, and attended its national conventions in 1856 and 1860. LOREN PINCKNEY WALDO (1802-1881), formerly a state legislator and later a judge, served only this single term in Congress as a Democrat. THOMAS BELDEN BUTLER (1806-1873), a Whig, also served in Washington for only one term. He later served on the Connecticut Supreme Court (1861-1873), finishing his tenure as Chief Justice. WALTER BOOTH (1791-1870) likewise served only a single term. He was a member of the Free Soil Party, formed to oppose the extension of slavery. (The 31st Congress contained 113 Democrats and 107 Whigs, with the nine Free Soil representatives holding the balance of power.) An interesting piece from an important moment of US history. Toned at the left half of the page and along edges.. Lightly soiled. Lightly frayed at left edge. ¼x2 piece missing from left edge (not affecting signatures). Otherwise, fine condition.See more material from these signers:THOMAS BELDEN BUTLER MAJOR GENERAL WALTER BOOTH LOREN PINCKNEY WALDO GOVERNOR CHAUNCEY FITCH CLEVELAND See more listings in our U.S. POLITICIANS (3,546) category.
