Reading a West Side Lumber Company roster reveals that skeleton log cars 1-100 were \"former Swayne Lumber Company cars\" and Shay No.12 was originally \"Swayne No. 6.\" Until now these unemotional facts, plus a few lines in previous logging histories, were about all even the most diehard fan knew about the Swayne Lumber Company. Yet Swayne\'s operation, while not as large as some California logging \"giants,\" was none the less unique. That so little was known led authors Paul Beckstrom and David Braun in a search to uncover the story of Swayne\'s logging enterprises and its impact on California\'s lumber industry. The result is a fascinating book that brings this colorful operation to life.Both men have done an outstanding job of research. It included poring over old records and newspapers, interviewing former employees, collecting old photos and jeeping into the wilds of the Merrimac Forest, retracing the old right-of-way and campsites to unearth the \"lost\" remnants of Swayne\'s narrow gauge railroad.While this book includes many rare and heretofore unpublished photographs, none are rarer than the photos from the Swayne family album taken by Lloyd Swayne, last president of the company and son of founder Robert Swayne. Swayne was a camera buff who enjoyed taking pictures of his lumber business. These included not only the mill site, box factory, mill machinery, building interiors and equipment, but the various camps and logging \"shows\" worked by Swayne in the 1930\'s. These \"snapshots\" are an indelible record of Swayne Lumber during its heyday and the authors and publisher are deeply grateful to the Swayne family for allowing their use.THE SWAYNE LUMBER COMPANY, NARROW GAUGE LOGGING IN THE MERRIMAC FOREST fills a void left by many books written about California\'s lumber industry. It is an outstanding history that all narrow gauge and logging fans will enjoy. As co-author David Braun explains in his introduction, \"the careful reader will note that beyond the romance of Shay locomotives working in the woods and the colorful loggers, this volume is also a journey through the evolution of technology.\" Technology was something the Swayne\'s were deeply interested in. They were pioneers in the use of gasoline-powered tractors, lumber carriers and logging trucks, and their mill at Oroville had some of the most up-to-date equipment in the state. Yet, by 1939, Swayne had decided to close down. Why did they quit? In the end, Swayne neither went bankrupt nor experienced serious labor problems. The family simply terminated operations, sold off the remaining equipment, closed the books and left town. With them went thirty years of logging and narrow gauge mountain railroading.
