Here are two mysterious and awesome Art Deco type wood floor columns made for holding large candles, either depicting stylized fish or birds — therein lies one of mysteries surrounding these beautiful pieces! How about headless mermaids ?

They are 22” tall, with the bases measuring 9.5” x 7”; the metal candle- holding top “dishes” have a diameter of 5”; the width of the columns at their widest is 5”.

We really don’t know where these amazing columns were made, and we have not found any similar items anywhere else — so we can only guess as to when they were crafted. It looks like Art Deco style from the 1920s, but their great condition leads us to think they may be from the 1950s or 1960s — which are all “educated” guesses.

The carving wraps around the columns from top to bottom, which is reminiscent of stylized folded & tucked bird wings or fish fins& tails. The lacquer work is similarly remarkable, reminding one of either fish scales or intricate bird feather patterns. In any case, there is no animal (or human) head on either of these pieces to give further identifying clues.

Both matching columns are in excellent condition, with no chips or scratches— and each has protective felt underneath its base. There are no traces of candle wax on the top “dishes”, so it appears that they were never used as lit candle holders. Forgive our gaps in knowledge— these belonged to a late distant relative who had them in storage and never mentioned them. From all appearances, it looks like they were sequestered right after acquisition and never got to be used or publicly displayed !

The only thing I have seen that compares the these columns are those from the palace of Julius Caesar received cleopatra initially from one of those movies— neo- Roman or neo- Egyptian?
