CORUNDUM var RUBY w/ CALCITE: Jegdalek Ruby Deposit, Surobi District, Kabul, Afghanistan. Dimensions: 2.5 x 2.4 x 1.5cm, thumbnail. A single, exceptional, well-formed, bright red, translucent Ruby crystals sits prominently on a sliver of starkly contrasting snow-white Calcite matrix! This Ruby crystal is stout and sharp with an incredibly deep red-pink color and is one of the better thumbnails from this locality I have seen! This is one of those pieces that just stands out in any case due to its vibrant red color! It is almost diamond-shaped in cross-section and is terminated at one end and the other end is growing into the Calcite. These Ruby crystals are \"frozen\" in the Calcite/Marble matrix and are very difficult to get to out as complete crystals like this one. The top termination looks a little irregular only because that is how it grew in place within the Calcite, it is NOT contacted or compromised in any way. It is in perfect condition! The color of the Ruby crystals is as intense as they come from here and it is translucent to slightly transparent even without backlighting and more pronounced with backlighting (second photo)!
