Piece of jaw of Basilosaurus (zeuglodon) fossil from Dakhla in Morocco!!!
Basilosaurus (king lizard) was a genus of archaic, carnivorous cetacean. It measured from 18 meters long (female) to 21 meters (male) and weighed 5 to 6 tons. It is considered an ancestor of modern whales. It lived between -45 and -36 million years ago, towards the end of the Eocene, and still had two small hind fins, inherited from a terrestrial ancestor; who now had to participate mainly in mating.
Basilosaurus was a carnivore hunting cetaceans or fish of a size considered sufficient for its meal, the equivalent of a dolphin.
The female Basilosaurus was in gestation for an estimated period of 6 months, and certainly gave birth to only one calf at a time. It is possible that, in the event of malnutrition, she could have induced an abortion to increase her own chances of survival.
The calf was probably taught to hunt by its mother, a behavior common to all cetaceans.
