Here is a real treasure for whoever acquires it. From the world-famous fossil beds of Fossil Lake, Green River Formation, Wyoming, this is from the Eocene, 52 million years old.
It is a superb, beautifully naturally colored, nearly perfect 8.5-inch Priscacara serrata. It is from the Capping layer from the ancient lake, famous for extraordinary fish fossils, and extremely hard plates.
This \"Prisky\" is a rare one indeed. The dorsal fins extend outward, and all the fins: dorsal, pectoral, pelvic, caudal (tail), and anal fins are all as good as they come. For instance, look at the tail fin, and at the branched soft rays at the end of each fin ray. Spectacular! You can\'t restore anything to look this good! Which is good, since it is not restored. The anal spikes are excellent, the skull and vertebrae, ribs, etc. are nearly perfect. Cap it all off with some of their tiny needle-sharp teeth in all their splendor.
The Capping layer plate is about 20.1\" by 15\" and it weighs a hefty 24.6 lbs. There are faint remnants of a couple other fish on the front as well.
The back of the plate was extremely hard to separate from the other Capping material, as is common. When you see the back, it becomes obvious why many preparators refuse to work with Capping layer specimens. Not an easy separation. There are bits on the back of some creature that was really big. In spite of their beauty, Capping layer specimens are just ridiculously hard and many require weeks to prepare a single specimen.
Fortunately, we are selling the front side, and the Prisky survived the the prepping with flying colors. Against the soft blue-grey natural background of Capping layer stone, it makes a striking display for museum, hotel, office or home.
