This rare vintage Capodimonte figural lamp is beautiful, featuring a romantic scene of a man and woman on horseback. This Italian-made porcelain lamp is quite large and includes an exquisite, lovely umbrella lampshade.
As the gentleman offers the lady a rose, two dogs peacefully lounge while one of the horses drinks from a flower-lined stream. The lamp is painted with delicate touches of gold -- the patterns on his coat, her skirt, and both hats. His lapel and ruffled shirt. The ruffles that flow across her décolletage. The ruffles on their sleeves. The buttons on his boot. The tips of the animals\' ears, and even the tips of the dogs\' tails. And of course the gold accents at the foot of the lamp, a well-known element in Capodimonte design. The reins of both horses are delicate gold cording.
This lamp is stunning and is truly a sight to behold. It is a significant art piece not only due to its beauty, but also to its size: the base of the lamp is 22 inches wide and 14 inches front to back. Including the lampshade, the lamp is 30 inches wide and 18 inches front to back. It stands 30 inches in height.
The lampshade is a thing of beauty in and of itself. The delicate ivory fabric has a subtle tone-on-tone floral pattern. Ivory fringe lines the scalloped bottom edge of the shade. A band of solid ivory fabric drapes down the center of both the front and the back of the lampshade. These bands of fabric draw to a point; the bottom edge of each band is accented with seven strands of crystal-shaped beads. The lampshade attaches to the harp with a four-prong cross bar fitting.
In addition to this center beading on both the front and back, there are ten more sections of this same beading interspersed throughout the fringe -- five sections of five strands each, on each side of the lamp. This beading appears to be plastic rather than glass (perhaps to not weigh down the lampshade); the strands of beads are a truly lovely touch. The beads have an Aurora Borealis (AB) finish, which adds a subtle shimmer. Each strand is punctuated with two small gold metal balls, and each strand of beads ends in a gold metal tip.
