According to legend, the apostle James spread the Gospel on the Iberian Peninsula in 7 years. He was killed in the Holy Land and two faithful disciples brought his body to finisterre. He was buried there in in the region in a Roman castro. His grave was rediscovered in the 9th century. King Ramiro I of Asturias saw the apostle appear in a dream on the eve of a battle against the Moors, on a horse with a cape, wide hat and sword, defeating the Moors... He told this to his soldiers and they shouted 'Santiago!!!' towards the enemy when they approached the ebeny for battle...From that moment on Saint James became the 'motor' behind the reconquista and the young Christian kingdoms in the north of Spain now also had an apostolic tradition. The tomb of the apostle was visited by the first pilgrims in the early Middle Ages and is now one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Christian world after Rome and Jerusalem. He is also the patron saint of Spain.
