Spanish Inquisition Necklace The Inquisition Necklace is made up of sections which are believed to be about three hundred years old, along with parts of modern manufacture. The necklace takes its name from these older sections, even though there is no specific documentation tying it to the Spanish Inquisition. It may also have spent some years at the French Court. The emeralds in the necklace are some of the most perfect on display anywhere in the world. They are also remarkable for the lengthwise drilled holes by which they are strung. To drill such stones with the tools available around 1600 demanded great lapidary skill. The emeralds are faceted along the lines of the natural crystal faces which enhance the rich velvety blue-green color and contrast vividly with the brilliantly faceted diamonds. The necklace was donated to the Smithsonian Institution by Cora Hubbard Williams.
