SIZE: 8.5 X 13.7 CM

Sofia Ionescu-Ogrezeanu (b. April 25, 1920, Fălticeni, Suceava, Romania - d. March 21, 2008, Bucharest, Romania) was the first female neurosurgeon in the world.

Origin and studies

Her father, Constantin Ogrezeanu, was a cashier at BNR Fălticeni. The mother, Maria Ogrezeanu, was a housewife. Sofia, who was also called Gherghina, attended primary school in her hometown, with teacher Spiridonescu, after which she completed the first six grades at Fălticeni Girls\' High School and the last two at \"Marica Brâncoveanu\" Central Girls\' School in Bucharest, where he got his baccalaureate in 1939. In the fall of the same year he entered the Faculty of Human Medicine in Bucharest, which he finished in 1945. During his time at the faculty, he did a first internship in ophthalmology. He did his second internship in 1943, as a rural circus doctor in Baia commune, a locality near Fălticeni. From October 15, 1943, he completed an internship in the Neurosurgery Service of Hospital no. 9 from Bucharest, joining the first neurosurgical team, considered the golden team, together with Prof. Dr. Dimitrie Bagdasar, the founder of Romanian neurosurgery and doctors Constantin Arseni and Ionel Ionescu (who became the husband of Miss Dr. Sofia Ogrezeanu from 1945), who at that time were secondary doctors within the specialty.

According to Sofia Ionescu (in a TVR interview with Eugenia Voda), she admits that she was the first female neurosurgeon, not in the world, but in Southeast Europe.

Professional activity

The year 1944, although the year of the terrible disasters caused by the war, still meant a decisive moment in Sofia Ionescu\'s career. It happened that, following the frequent bombings of Bucharest, too many wounded people were brought in at the same time compared to the small number of doctors who had to save their lives.

In this context, an injured child, for whom surgery was of utmost urgency, was brought in at a time when no doctor was available. To the surprise of everyone, especially Dr. Bagdasar, the young student offered to operate on him, an intervention that proved life-saving.

\"This operation - Sofia Ionescu will confess - decided my life for 47 years before, while I was in neurosurgery, and brought it 180 degrees from what I had proposed, a quiet life as a doctor internist in my hometown, Fălticeni\".

In 1945 he defended his doctorate in medicine and surgery. In the same year, she marries doctor Ionel Ionescu, secondary neurosurgeon, with whom she had two children, Constantin (b. February 26, 1946) and Ioana (b. July 27, 1953). In 1946, she participates in the secondary school competition, in 1954 she is employed as primary physician at the Hospital Clinic \"Dr. Gh. Marinescu\", and in 1976 he obtained the degree of primary neurosurgeon II.

In the recommendation given by the hospital management, it was mentioned that Dr. Sofia Ionescu contributed to the training of new doctors, leaving a professional mark on each one: speed, finding the best technique, suitable for each case. He worked in a team for years, alongside Dr. Constantin Arseni.

Rodica Simionescu evokes numerous moments in the life of Sofia Ionescu as a neurosurgeon, all together giving us a complete moral and professional profile, of a distinguished personality, known throughout the world for her outstanding contributions in the field of neurosurgery, especially for spinal cord operations and brain, and for his scientific works published in Acta chirurgica Belgica, Journal de chirurgie, Neurologia, Psychiatria, Neurologia, Neurochirurgia, Revue Roumaine d\' Endocrinologie.

The number of articles and communications presented in the country and abroad amounts to almost 120.

For the special merits proven since her student years, Sofia Ionescu was rewarded with the Red Cross Medal of Distinction (1943), with the \"Highlighted in Medical-Health Work\" badge (1957), with the \"20th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Motherland\" medal (1964), with the medal \"25 years since the Proclamation of the Republic\" (1972).

In 1996, she received the ANFDUR Honorary Diploma for exceptional merit, the \"Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu\" Award and the Honorary Diploma of the National Confederation of Women in Romania. Also in that year, 1996, he became a member of the Romanian Society for the History of Medicine, and on March 29, 1997, an Emeritus Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences. He was awarded the Honorary Diploma of A.N.F.D.U.R., the \"Engineer Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu\" Award, the Honorary Diploma for special merits in the promotion of science and technology in Romania, the Honorary Diploma of the Society for the History of Medicine, the Diploma of Honorary Citizen of Fălticeni Municipality and the Medal of Honor of the same municipality, culminating in the awarding of the highest award in Romania, the Star of Romania, in the rank of knight, which he received at the beginning of March 2008.
