Oval birch bark barrette with a porcupine quill Snapping Turtle. This is on a traditional birch bark medallion and is by by Paul St John, Mohawk craftsman.The turtle is of green dyed porcupine quills - when Paul dyed these he left the darker ends on the quills which makes a very effective differentiation in turtle\'s shell etc. Turtle is on an oval birch bark medallionwith an outer border of tidal sweetgrass.This is traditional quill on birch bark work innovatively made into a barrette.

Late spring is when we often see snapping turtles in the rural roads near my Maine home. Snapping turtles move from near the ponds/lakes/rivers where they live to lay their eggs sometimes crossing roads to do so. Moving them out of the road can be a challenge.... Hopefully since it is spring you will still have a snow shovel in your trunk or truck bed - Quite effective tool for moving a turtle - along with a sturdy boot to help encourage it onto the shovel blade.

Paul St. John lives in Maine near his mother\'s family. His mother was Passamaquoddy, Maliseet and MicMac. He grew up on the Mohawk lands in New York, his father\'s homeland and is an enrolled Mohawk tribal member.
