Beautifulfold-out map of colonization and trade in the New World. - This handsome map is lithographed in fullcolor on two sides and opens to a generous 23\" x 30\".
- It is a fascinating window into the history of the area known as theSpanish Main — the islands of the Caribbean, Central America, and thenorthern coast of South America.
- It was a realm rich in wealth,particularly gold, silver, and precious gems, and the map locates thefortified ports Spain built along the coast, the routes followed by thetreasure-laden galleons, and the site of numerous shipwrecks.
- The map itself is a composite, based on charts designed circa 1720 bycartographer Herman Moll, and it has a decorative title cartouche,compass rose, and vignettes of sailing ships.
- The coverage area extendsfrom the Isthmus of Panama to the Great Lakes and Newfoundland,including present-day Texas, Louisiana, Florida, the Great Lakes area,Cuba, Georgia,Virginia, the Bahamas, Bermuda, and more.
- On the reverse side of the map there is a detailed, cut-away view of aSpanish galleon, along with illustrations of cannons, navigationalaids, and some of the booty carried home by these ships.
