Senator Tom Connally 1940 SIGNED letter

Letter from Senator Tom Connally to Thomas F. Wallis, Bandmaster dated September 25, 1940. SIGNED by Connally.

The letter measures about 8" x 10.5".  It is watermarked with the United States seal (shown in close-up photo of reverse of letter, with contrast enhanced).

The letter is written on stationery of the U.S. Senate Committee on Public Buildings and Grounds, which Connolly chaired at the time. Of interest, one of the committee members on the letterhead was Senator Harry S. Truman of Missouri.

Connally's letter included personal remarks: "It is a pleasure to have recalled our early political ventures and our associations together. Your band and your own part therein had much to do with my first election to the Senate and I shall always be grateful and appreciative."

Thomas Terry Connally (1877 – 1963) represented Texas in both the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, as a member of the Democratic Party. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1917 to 1929, and in the U.S. Senate from 1929 to 1953. In the Senate, he chaired the Committee on Foreign Relations from 1941, giving strong support to President Franklin Roosevelt's anti—German and anti-Japanese policies. He worked with Republican Senator Arthur H. Vandenberg to ensure bipartisan support for an internationalist policy, including the new United Nations. He led the committee in supporting the Truman Doctrine in 1947, the Marshall Plan in 1948 and NATO in father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
