This very scarce open neck officer tunic with Red Army military insignia & rank are something unusual even during Russian Civil War (1917-1923). This pattern was influenced by British army Officer Service Dress pattern 1912 open neck tunic. Since from 1916 (even though ended of Russian Civil War by White & Red Army officers) many Imperial Russian Army officers preferred a new style of officer tunic that influenced from British Army Service Dress Pattern 1902 & French Army M1915 officer tunic and merged with Imperial Russian Army M1907 officer tunic design with officer clothing material. Both know as English or French style tunic model of 1916.
After collapsed of Russian Empire in 1917, Russia turn into civil war. Between White Army (Former Imperial Russian soldiers who are loyalists of Imperial Russian monarchy) & Red Army (Revolutionary and Communists).
Since Russian Empire been shortages of weapons, foods, equipments and uniforms even in first year of WW1. And allied support of Russian White Army in civil war. United States, United Kingdom, France even former enemies such German Empire did also support Russian White Army with their weapons, foods, funds, equipments, uniforms to fight against Red Army.
One of UK military support was their Army Officer Pattern 1912 Service Dress Tunic, so white Russian White Army officer would simply attach their former Imperial Russian Army officer shoulder boards or newly created White Army units rank Insignia.
In opposite sites Revolutionaries Red Army did also used former IRA & IRN uniforms without Imperial Russian insignia but with newly made insignia in 1917 (red ribbon), on 16 January 1919 the official adoption of the new uniforms and insignia was announced by the Revolutionary Military Council via Order No. 116. Then in 1920 they got slightly improved for officers class (shape + red star). And in 1922 ranks & insignia that been improved once again but it still same places on left cuff & sleeve like their predecessors. (The 1922 ranks insignia m you can see on this tunic).
Since Russian Made English & French M1916 Officer Tunic also popular among Red Army officers and they same fate as White Army, shortage of supplies. Many western made White Army uniforms had been captured or copied. This tunic might be copied version of Russian made tunic Western Europeans style in 1918-1920 that had predecessor from Russian made UK & FR M1916 tunic British Army Officer
