LORD RICHARD BICKERTON PEMELL LYONS, 1st Earl (1817-1887) was the British Minister to Washington during the Civil War. After the outbreak of the war, negotiations concerning Confederate envoys on the Trent fell upon him. Later, for 20 years, he was minister to France.

2 pp, 4 1/2 x 7, ALS on mourning stationary, Washington, 1859 Oct. 6. He writes to Commodore Shubrick [likely William Branford Shubrick, an officer in the Navy whose service included the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War]. Lyons writes: “Captain Buchanan [who was in charge of the Washington Navy Yard] holds out to me a hope that you will be disposed to accompany me tomorrow in a visit to the Navy Yard. Should this be the case, I will, if it will be agreeable to you, call for you soon after one o’clock.

“Yours faithfully, Lyons”
