\"John Bull\" isan imaginary figure who is the personification of England, similar to the American \"Uncle Sam\".He is shown in cartoons and caricatures as a prosperous farmer of the 18th century. John Bull first appeared as a character in a series of political satires by John Arbuthnot (1667-1735). He has also been not-so-nicely referred to as \"The Bourgeois Capitalist\".
This jug was manufactured in France, but was likely intended as an export item for England. There were two distinct periods of production-before WWI, and after WWI. (WWI was fought 1914-1918) The backstamp/makers mark on this jug indicates it was made after WWI.
This impressive jug stands 13\" tall and weighs over 3 lbs. His waistcoat is a dark raspberry or maroon color with a black vest and light blue bowtie. He is holding two bags (of money?) As is typical of majolica figures, blue glaze is found throughout the interior surface. Inside on the bottom, there is a light accumulation of dirt, reflecting the age and active display of this amazing piece.
I have referenced \"The Old Stuff\" internet site, as well as \"Majolica Figures\", by Helen Cunningham for it\'s provenance.The jug has numerous underglaze flaws/stray paint marks which add to the charm. Please review the pictures carefully. Any bright spots are from the flash of my camera.Placed on a mantle, or as the anchor piece to a jug or pitcher collection, it is sure to make a statement and draw attention.
