SAPPHIRE. 0.59 cts. MadagascarN / AHome pageA question?Send to a friendThe advantages of this productSapphire is a precious stone; this mineral is a variety of the corundum mineral family. The red variety of corundum is ruby, the red color is due to traces of chromium oxide.
The use of the word sapphire alone is only reserved for the blue variety. We also find pink, yellow, green, transparent or multicolored which are called then, pink sapphire, yellow sapphire, etc. The blue variety is the best known, the pinkish-orange hue, called Padparadja or Padparadscha sapphire, is the rarest.
Sapphires are made up of aluminum oxide crystals (Al2O3) containing trace impurities (oxides) that give them their color (titanium and iron for blue, vanadium for purple, chromium for pink, iron for yellow and green). The color is due to the appearance of energy levels within the forofferden band (Gap) of the corundum, due to the presence of impurities. These levels modify the emission and absorption spectra of the material and therefore its color.
Star sapphires can be found where the asterism is due to the presence of inclusions of rutile needles.
