Maker: This exceptional tall lidded pedestal urn or vase has the blue underglaze mark of Germany's Carl Teichert Meissen.
In 1879, the company Carl Teichert had founded in 1863 began producing fine porcelain in Meissen, Germany. That's the town where the better known firm Königliche Porzellanmanufaktur Meissen - the Royal (later State) Porcelain Manufactory Meissen - had produced superior quality porcelain since 1710.
Though much of the Teichert company's products were utilitarian in nature, it also produced superb quality items for the top end of the market. This lidded urn or vase - called a Schlangenvasen - is one of them.
Age: Its blue circle Meissen mark dates the urn's production to between December 1882 and December 1929. Source: theoldstuff.com. Christies sale house dated an almost identical urn specifically to 1900 and that's likely when this one was made too.
Design: The vividly colored polychrome floral design is superbly hand painted on fine pure white porcelain in a classic Deutsche Blumen or Dresden Flowers style. The urn is richly trimmed in gold, with unusual handles formed as interlaced snakes that lend it a further touch of distinction.
Size: It's about 13 inches tall with the lid and about 10 3/8 inches tall without it. The two pieces together weigh 1 pound 11 ounces.
Condition: Both pieces are in overall excellent condition for their age with no marks, nicks, cracks, stains, discoloration or known repairs. There is light wear to some of the gold edges and to the handles, and a small chip on the underside of the base that's not visible when the urn is on display. It's shown in the photo with the red arrow.
