SUPERB c1811 CHAMBERLAINS WORCESTER SUCRIER, SUGAR BOWL, LONDON SHAPE, REGENCY:
$199.99

Maker: This beautiful and richly decorated antique Regency era sucrier or covered sugar bowl is by Chamberlains Worcester, one of the early companies in Worcester, England's, complex history of porcelain making.

Chamberlains Worcester began around 1786 when the porcelain decorator Robert Chamberlain, an apprentice of Worcester Porcelain's founder Dr John Wall, created a new company that decorated porcelain produced by other factories. It is believed to have begun manufacturing its own porcelain wares around 1791.

The company was in business as Chamberlains Worcester until 1852, when a major fire decimated the factory and William Kerr and Richard Binns assumed majority control, changing the company name to Kerr & Binns.

Age: Chamberlains Worcester received a royal warrant in 1807, shortly before this incredibly beautiful sucrier was produced. On the inside of the lid is a black Chamberlains Worcester maker's mark that states: "Chamberlains Worcester, 155 New Bond Street, London, Royal Porcelain Manufacturers". This mark came into use in 1811, making that the earliest the sucrier could have been produced. The mark was retired in 1840.Sources: Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks by Geoffrey A. Goddard; The Museum of Royal Worcester.

According to Goddard, early in the company's history Chamberlain marks often appeared inside the lid as this one does, suggesting that the sucrier was produced in the earlier years of the mark's usage.

Design: With vibrant floral cartouches, gold bands of stylized flowers and leaves, and fine detailing, the gold-trimmed and highly decorative London shape sucrier is a beautiful example of why Chamberlains Worcester wares are so coveted.

Size: It's 7 inches long between the far ends of the handles and 3 1/2 inches wide at the top. It weighs 1 pound 3 ounces.

Condition: Both pieces are in overall excellent condition for antique porcelain of this age and fragility. There are no marks, nicks, chips, cracks, scratches, stains, discoloration, repairs or significant wear. There is light crazing at the top of the base that is not visible when the lid is in place and several small spots of wear in the design - examples are shown in the photo with the red arrows.

Please check all the photos very carefully - they are an important part of the description.
