Remer regarding his role in putting down the conspiracy will accompany the purchase. The SS German Reserve Army under Major Otto Remer started carrying out orders from Col. Stauffenberg until he heard directly from the Fuhrer that he was alive, and the attempt had failed. The Fuhrer promoted Remer two ranks and ordered him to crush the conspiracy and arrest Col. Stauffenberg. Surrounded in the Berlin headquarters, Col. Stauffenberg and a handfull of the Co-Conspirators engaged in a short but violent gun battle with Major Remer's troops and those German soldiers aligned with them. In the process, Col. Stauffenberg was wounded, and the group surrendered. Major Remer tried to carry out the German Fuhrer's orders to "arrest them alive", but General Fromm upon his release from captivity, countermanded Major Remer's orders and had them executed. (The Conspirator's claimed at the point of execution that Fromm was doing so to cover his guilt of prior knowledge of the assassination attempt). With Stauffenberg and three others shot, a great purge in the officer corp started with the arrest of many officers by the Gestapo. Among those arrested was Field Marshall Romel, who like Fromm, knew about the attempt but wanted no direct involvement. While the Gestapo forced Rommel to kill himself, Fromm did not escape the hangman's noose, and was executed for Cowardness in April 1945. Major Remer, for his part, was also a Knights Cross holder in which the award was presented to him by the Fuhrer personally. A stroke of luck really, as Major Remer remembered the Fuhrer's voice and was able to recognize him when he was put on the phone with the Fuhrer during the Valkyrie Coup. Because of this, Major Remer went into action immediately to reverse the orders and to put down the Valkyrie Coup per the German Fuhrer's orders. Post War, Remer was never apologelic for arresting Col. Stauffenberg and putting down the Valkyrie Coup. Wrongly, Remer always considered Col. Stauffenberg and his Co-Conspirators to be traitors of Germany. Remer also published a book in 1951 where he discusses Operation Valkyrie and the Coup attempt from his perspective.
