LISTED HERE A MAGNIFICENT LARGE MOUNTED PRINT FROM THE ARCHIVES.
Nottingham Victoria opened as a joint station on 24 May 1900 and served both the Great Central and Great Northern railway companies. They argued over its name: to distinguish it from the existing Nottingham Midland, the GC had wanted it to be known as \'Central\', whilst the GN had initially called it Joint but since it was opened on the Queen\'s birthday, the suffix \'Victoria\' was the diplomatic compromise agreed upon. The station came into operation over a year after the Great Central Railway started main line services between London and Sheffield. Its construction was a monumental feat: many houses had to be demolished and some 700,000cu yd (535,000cu m) of sandstone rock excavated before building could begin. An area covering some thirteen acres (5.26ha) was quarried out, measuring 650yd (594m) from north to south with an average width of 110yd (100m); a tunnel at each end provided access. Nottingham Victoria was cavernous: its cathedral-like roof with three glazed apex sections, spanning the entire width, was divided by the station buildings on the two main island platforms. Each had four bays for local services or storage, bringing the total number of platforms to twelve. Passing loops were also provided, allowing the constant freight traffic to keep moving. The main station building and entrance, surmounted by a magnificent clock tower, was at ground level facing Milton Street; next to it was the imposing Victoria Station Hotel. The station closed on 4 September 1967, although through services on the GC main line had ceased on 3 September 1966. BR Class 4 4-6-0 No 75041,
