HISTORY OF RAILWAYS
Seen here during the early days of steaman early official image of one of the well known 8\' \'Singles named Sultan. First built in 1847, she was one of 24 engines of the \'Rover\' class renewed at Swindon between 1871 and 1888. Several points of interest arc worthy of note in this picture. For instance, the sandwich frames and inverted springs on the leading wheels (not a bogie incidentally!), and the sand boxes just in front of the leading wheels mounted on the running plate, a position they occupied for 80 years afterwards. Note also the braking, now transferred to the tender and applied by means of a crank handle, a feature also perpetuated. In those days, too, the engine crew wore white cord overalls so the engines just had to be clean or the driver\'s and fireman\'s uniform would soon suffer. Finally, note the `Coffin\' box on the tender rear for the use of a travelling porter to `watch over the following train.
