Up for sale is a ONE OF A KIND, ORIGINAL January 19, 1987 hand-signed letter from Senator Edward M. Kennedy to Mr. Stoney Cooks. The letter talks of Senator Kennedy's sermon at the Union United Methodist Church in Boston on Martin Luther King's birthday.
Senator Kennedy says in his letter - "Yesterday, I had the privilege of delivering the Martin Luther King Birthday Sermon at the Union United Methodist Church in Boston. I wanted to share my remarks with you on Dr. King and on why it is so important, now more than ever, to pursue his dream -- our dream -- for the American goals of freedom, justice and equality for all our people."This letter from Senator Kennedy was dated January 19, 1987 - the same day after his Sermon.
WOW - This inimitable letter is a real piece of history!
The 1-page letter measures 8 1/2" x 11" and it was sent to Stoney Cooks previously of Atlanta, Georgia. Stoney and his wife, Shirley (Belefonte) Cooks, were both veterans of the early civil rights movement. Stoney Cooks worked with Dr. Martin Luther King as a staffer at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The letter is typed on United States Senate stationary, dated January 19, 1987. Generally, the letter is in Good condition. There are some "wrinkles" in the paper and there are 2 crease folds across the middle from where it was originally folded when mailed. Some wear around the edges, and other small dings. The letter is signed "Ted Kennedy" above the typed "Edward M. Kennedy".
The 2-page (4 pages front and back) 8 1/2" x 14" copy of the "REMARKS OF EDWARD M. KENNEDY / MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. HOLIDAY / UNION UNITED METHODIST CHURCH / JANUARY 18, 1987, is also in Good condition. Three creases across the middle from where it was originally folded when mailed. It is stapled in the upper left hand corner. Some wear along the edges and some other small dings. This original letter and copy of Senator Kennedy's sermonis a GREAT addition to any collection.
