DC Studios' head JAMES GUNNhas announced that the all-new cinematic DC UNIVERSE begins in 2024 with the in-continuity animated series CREATURE COMMANDOS, a rag-tag team of monstrous rejects turned Black-Ops operatives for the US Government under the command of the SUICIDE SQUAD's AMANDA WALLER. With the exception of Waller and Gunn's own TheSuicide Squad oddity WEASEL, none of the characters have yet been featured in either animated or live-action DC productions, but for longtime DC readers they'll be recognizable "deep-cuts" from DC's darker lore.
Two of those deep-cuts hail from creator GRANT MORRISON's 2006-2007 multi-series crossover event, SEVEN SOLDIERS, which consisted of two (2) "book-ending" one-shots and six (6) different limited series, each highlighting a different character that plays a significant role in the overall action of the event. One of Morrison's series, FRANKENSTEIN, features the titular character and his BRIDE, both unique Morrison creations that draw from the open-source monsters of literary legend.
Interestingly, both Frankenstein and The Bride were incorporated into DC's line-wide relaunch in 2011, DC The New 52, and even starred in their own ongoing if not relatively short-lived series, Frankenstein and The Agents of SHADE. Frankenstein also became a DC Action Figure in 2022 as part of McFarlane Toys' DC Multiverse line of toys. Gunn's Creature Commandos will effectively assume the role that the organization SHADE had in The New 52, with Frankenstein and The Bride serving as field leaders of the Commandos when the series debuts on HBO Max in mid-2024.
