FORBES FIELD

Forbes Field, located in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was a historic baseball park that served as the home of the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1909 until 1970. Named after British General John Forbes, the stadium was known for its picturesque setting, nestled near the University of Pittsburgh\'s campus and Schenley Park. Forbes Field was one of the earliest steel-and-concrete ballparks, boasting a seating capacity that grew to over 35,000 through various expansions. It featured a distinctive asymmetrical layout with a deep left-center field and a high wall known as \"Greenberg Gardens,\" which later became \"Kiner\'s Korner,\" contributing to its unique character and playing conditions.

The era of Roberto Clemente, who played right field for the Pirates from his debut in 1955 until the stadium\'s closure in 1970, is one of the most celebrated periods in Forbes Field\'s history. Clemente, renowned for his exceptional hitting, cannon-like arm, and graceful fielding, became a fan favorite and an iconic figure in Pittsburgh sports. During his tenure at Forbes Field, Clemente achieved numerous milestones, including four National League batting titles and the 1966 NL MVP award. His impact extended beyond statistics, as he became a symbol of pride for the Puerto Rican community and an advocate for humanitarian causes.

Clemente\'s era at Forbes Field was also marked by team success. The Pittsburgh Pirates won the World Series in 1960, famously clinching the championship with Bill Mazeroski\'s dramatic walk-off home run in Game 7 against the New York Yankees. This period solidified Forbes Field as a hallowed ground for baseball, with Clemente\'s prowess contributing significantly to the team\'s success and the stadium\'s storied legacy. The park was replaced by Three Rivers Stadium in 1970, but the memories of Clemente\'s extraordinary performances and the vibrant atmosphere of Forbes Field continue to resonate with baseball fans and historians.
