Richard Corben: “This is my first published art. In 1967, I was working at Calvin Productions in Kansas City. I wanted to get my commercial art career off the ground but I didn't exactly know how to go about it. I've always been interested in science fiction so I did this illustration and several others in the evenings. It never occurred to me to make slides or photographs of my art to send to prospective editors and art directors. I just wrapped it up and sent it to THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION cold. Luckily, Edward Ferman, the editor, liked it and immediately sent me a check. It became the cover to the September 1967 issue. Unfortunately, follow-up art work commissioned by Ferman was destroyed in the mail. I was so discouraged, several years passed before I tried similar adventures.
The rock texture in the painting was achieved by spraying color on crumpled paper, then flattening and pasting it to the finished background.”
